About the Trek

Chandrataal Lake Road Trip is a thrilling adventure that takes you through the picturesque landscapes of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. This safari offers an exciting opportunity to explore the rugged terrain, high mountain passes, and serene valleys, while traversing in a sturdy jeep. The safari usually begins from the popular hill station of Manali, located in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. From Manali, embark on a thrilling journey towards the mesmerizing Chandratal Lake, situated at an altitude of about 4,300 meters (14,100 feet) in the Spiti Valley.

The route takes you through Atal Tunnel, after crossing which, you enter in the whole another world of serene beauty. The landscape changes dramatically when you cross the Atal Tunnel. After crossing the tunnel, you will be taking the road to the right side. As you make your way towards Chandratal, you’ll cross the famous Rohtang Pass, situated at an elevation of 3,978 metres (13,051 feet). This high mountain pass offers breathtaking panoramic views and serves as a gateway to the Lahaul and Spiti valleys.

As you continue, you’ll pass through picturesque villages like Khoksar, where you can catch glimpses of the local way of life. The road leads you to Chhatru, taking you along the scenic Chandra River. The river flows parallel to the road, adding to the beauty of the journey.

The landscapes around Chhatru are rugged and awe-inspiring, with rocky cliffs and vast open spaces. The next leg of the journey takes you from Chhatru to Batal, a small village located at an altitude of around 4,270 metres (14,010 feet). The road passes through challenging terrain, including stretches of rocky paths and river crossings.

Batal is known for its picturesque location and serves as a popular pit stop for travellers. The final stretch of the route leads you from Batal to the enchanting Chandratal Lake. This section is considered the most adventurous part of the journey, with steep ascents and hairpin bends.

As you approach Chandratal, the landscapes become even more dramatic, with snow-capped peaks and vast meadows. The road ends near the lake, and from there, a short hike takes you to the mesmerising shores of Chandratal.
